Teen Honored For Rescuing Man During Sandy In Long Beach
LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 16-year-old boy was honored Sunday night for saving an elderly man during Superstorm Sandy in Long Beach, Long Island last year.
Dylan Osyatinsky was honored at the BACH Jewish Center Gala Dinner at the Allegria Hotel, at 80 W. Broadway in Long Beach. He spoke with WCBS 880 about his efforts a year ago.
"It was us walking around during the hurricane, outside with my brother and my cousins, and we heard someone – I heard someone," he said.
The others in the group insisted "it was nothing," but Osyatinsky said they needed to go and check it out.
"There was someone in his basement and he couldn't get out, so we pulled him out," Osyatinsky said.
Afterward, Osyatinsky's family took care of the man.
"My mother always, like, helps people out; lets them come over for meals and stuff, so he came over and we gave him clothing, and then we helped him out; I guess, he went to a shelter, I think, for the rest of the time, and now he's at the Hoffman Manor (assisted living facility)," he said.
The gala also honored other local heroes who helped rebuild hard-hit Long Beach after Sandy.
