CBS News: Mathematically Impossible For Ted Cruz To Clinch Republican Nomination

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Sen. Ted Cruz's night got even worse.

After getting swept in the five Northeast Republican primaries by Donald Trump, CBS News reports it is now mathematically impossible for the senator to clinch the nomination.

If there is a contested convention, Cruz would have to wait beyond the first ballot for any shot at the Republican nomination.

"We're ready for Ted Cruz and John Kasich to unite behind Donald Trump," Corey Lewandowski, Trump's campaign manager, told CBSN Live.

Before Tuesday night's results, Trump said it's time for Cruz and Kasich to call it quits.

"I'm many millions of votes ahead and I'm hundreds of delegates ahead," Trump told CBS News. "They have no way of getting there. They really should drop off and we unify the party."

CBS News' Major Garrett reported Trump should pick up between 90 to 105 delegates after winning the primaries in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware.

According to CBS News' latest tally, Trump has 929 of the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the Republican nomination. Cruz is second at 555, while Kasich has 147.
