Jets To Officially Introduce Tebow On Monday
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- He has arrived, but you'll have to wait a few more days to see him in a Jets jersey.
It is officially Tebow time in the Tri-State Area after the New York Jets' newest addition, QB Tim Tebow, touched down in New Jersey Thursday afternoon. Chopper 2-HD was over Morristown Airport as the star got off his own plane and was whisked away to Jets camp in nearby Florham Park.
Tebow must sign a rewritten contract because of a technicality before he can officially join the Jets. That issue keeps Tebow on Denver's salary cap for 24 hours after he signs the new deal. The Jets announced late Thursday they would hold off on the introductory press conference until Monday, at a time yet to be determined. The team also said the event will be streamed live on the team's official website.
Wednesday night, after the trade was finalized, Tebow addressed the New York media, saying he was "very thankful to play for such a great organization."
Arguably the most popular player in the NFL last season, Tebow is obviously no stranger to the spotlight. His religious pose called "Tebowing" became a national craze, but how will he adapt to the city that never sleeps and is there any trepidation when it comes to the bright lights of the big city?
"Not really. I'm excited about it. I think it's a great market, it's a great city. I'm excited to be a Jet now," Tebow said.
Tebow is expected to be the backup quarterback now. The Jets made it absolutely clear that Mark Sanchez is the starter. But will that create tension between the two of them?
Tebow said it will not and that he and Sanchez spoke on the phone Wednesday.
"Got a chance to catch up a little bit and had a great conversation and looking forward to seeing him soon and working with him. We've been blessed to get to know each other in the last few years and definitely have a lot of respect for him," Tebow said.
CBS 2's Otis Livingston spoke to Jets' General Manager Mike Tannenbaum at the team's facility, and addressed the dynamic between the two popular quarterbacks.
Livingston: "How will this affect Mark Sanchez, who many think has a fragile psyche anyway? Now you bring in the popular Tim Tebow to be the back-up."
Tannenbaum: "We had great conversations with Mark as well as Tim. You know, Mark's a guy we drafted high. We've won a lot of games with Mark, gave him a five-year extension. He's our starting quarterback."
Speaking from the LSU pro day in Baton Rouge, La., on Thursday, head coach Rex Ryan said he full expects Tebow to fit right in with the Jets, plus add an element of unpredictability to the offense.
"Instead of a team just preparing for our base offense, they will have to prepare for what we do and what we may do," Ryan said. "Tim is an outstanding football player, and we can use him. He'll fit our wildcat package. As a defensive coach, I know how hard it is to defend the wildcat. We can take it to another level with Tim. We will have things for Tebow each week."
