City School Teacher Claims Skin Color Got Her Bounced From Woodlawn Bar
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A New York City school teacher claims she was out with her friends to ring in 2016 when she was met with an attitude from ugly days gone by.
"I was discriminated against because I have brown skin," Corinne Petido said.
As CBS2's Tony Aiello reported, Petido claims it happened at Behan's Pub on Katonah Avenue in Woodlawn.
She's visited there before and was surprised when the bouncer turned her away.
"Right away he said, 'it's a ticketed event so you can't come in,'" Petido said.
Curious, Petido joined friends at the pub across the street and asked a white friend to try to get into Behan's. That friend asked to remain anonymous.
"The bouncer looked at me, gave me a head nod, and I just walked right in," Katie said.
"He did not check her ID and did not specify that it was a ticketed event," Petido said.
Petido claims she confronted the bouncer and asked why her friend was allowed in, but she was not.
"He looked at me and said, 'because you don't look like the women inside,'" she said, "I actually walked away in tears because it was just heartbreaking and it really cut deep."
"The bouncer said, "you don't look like the other women in here,'" Katie explained, "I was standing right there with her."
When CBS2's Aiello went to Behan's to get some answers a bartender referred him to a manager who wasn't around and hasn't gotten back to him.
Petido posted her concern on social media and plans to filed a complaint with the city commission on human rights.
