Suspects In Fatal Shooting Of Basketball Star Tayshana Murphy Waive Extradition
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two suspects who were arrested in South Carolina for the shooting death of a New York City high school basketball star will soon be headed north.
U.S. Marshals say 21-year-old Robert Cartagena and 21-year-old Tyshawn Brockington were arrested Wednesday in Columbia, South Carolina. The two were found hiding in a closet at an apartment complex.
They were being held in Columbia on fugitive charges. Richland County Sheriff's spokesman Curtis Wilson said the men waived extradition during a hearing Thursday morning and will be taken to New York City.
They two are accused of shooting and killing 18-year-old Tayshana Murphy earlier this month.
The senior at Murry Bergtraum was shot in the head in the Grant Houses in Morningside Heights.
A third suspect, 24-year-old Terique Collins, was also arrested in connection with the shooting on criminal possession of a weapon charges.
