Suspect To Police: 'Why Are You Guys Looking At Me Like I Just Stole This iPad?'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two police officers were injured Wednesday while apprehending an alleged thief at a Manhattan subway station, police said.
Around 3 p.m., Sgt. Antoine Ducret and his partner, Officer Joseph Dellauniversita, spotted a man matching the description of a suspect wanted for allegedly stealing an iPad from a store on Mulberry Street, police said.
A 25-year-old employee had told officers a man walked into the store and swiped her iPad from the counter before fleeing towards East Houston Street.
Police broadcast the suspect's description over the department radio and Ducret and Dellauniversita canvassed the Bleecker Street and Lafayette Street subway station where they later saw the suspect getting off the train, iPad in hand, police said.
The man saw the officers looking at him and apparently asked them, "Why are you guys looking at me like I just stole this iPad?"
The officers gave chase after the suspect, identified as Kevin Chavis, 22, tried to run away.
Chavis fought the officers before finally being subdued, police said.
Ducret was taken to Bellevue Hospital for cuts and abrasions to his legs and arms.
Dellauniversita was taken to Beth Israel Hospital where he was treated for a fractured wrist and cuts and abrasions to his legs and arms.
Chavis has been charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, petit larceny, criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property and obstructing governmental administration, police said.
