"Shots. Pop, pop, that's it we covered over here," Carmen Cruz told CBS 2's Alice Gainer.
Cruz works two stores down and took cover as soon as he heard the gunfire.
Around 11:30 Monday morning three men entered the store along 5th Ave near 48th Street. The men grabbed some jewelry and the owner chased them out, police said. The owner swung an umbrella at a suspect who then turned and shot him in the leg.
A bullet casing remained on the ground near the store where police were working to determine how many shots had been fired. Many people, including the store owner's son, did not want to speak on camera.
Neighbors were relieved that the incident did not escalate further.
"There's too many kids in broad daylight with their parents. What if that bullet would've ricochet off him and hit a little kid, you know?" said one resident.
The owner of the store was taken to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition.
Charges were pending against the suspect in custody.
