Suspect Held In Killing Of Cayuga Sheriff's Deputy
SCIPIO, N.Y. (AP) -- The Cayuga County Sheriff's office says an off-duty deputy was shot dead at his home and a suspect is in custody.
The sheriff's office says 58-year-old Bernard Gallow was killed in his home in Scipio around 11:15 p.m. Saturday and a suspect, whose name was withheld, was apprehended at the scene and was arraigned in Brutus Town Court on a second-degree murder charge early Sunday.
Sheriff David Gould told the Auburn Citizen that the killing was not work-related.
Gallow had worked for the sheriff's department since 1988 and had recently retired from road patrol and started working part-time as a courthouse security guard. He was also a part-time officer in the Moravia Police Department.
A news conference was scheduled for noon Monday at the Cayuga County Public Safety Building.
