Suspect Arrested In Hit-And-Run That Injured Cyclist In Medford, L.I.

MEDFORD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Long Island Tuesday arrested a man in a hit-and-run crash that left a bicyclist seriously injured.

The victim as riding his bicycle on the eastbound shoulder in front of 344 Jamaica Ave. in Medford around 6:25 a.m. Tuesday, when he was struck by a vehicle, Suffolk County police said.

The driver sped off afterward, police said.

Following an investigation, Suffolk County police Fifth Squad investigators arrested Joseph Iorio, 19, of North Patchogue near his home around 3:30 p.m., police said. Police believe Iorio was driving a 2006 Honda that was involved in the crash.

The car was impounded, police said.

The victim, who has not been identified, was being treated for serious injuries at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in East Patchogue late Tuesday, police said.

Iorio was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious physical injury, and was to be held overnight at the Fifth Precinct and arraigned at Suffolk County First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.

The investigation into the incident continued Tuesday evening. Anyone with information was asked to call Fifth Squad detectives at (631) 854-8552.
