Suspect Arrested In Attack On NYPD Officer In Bronx Subway Station
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police have arrested a suspect in an attack on a police officer in the subway in the Bronx earlier this month, and have decided that a woman that had been wanted earlier was not involved.
An on-duty, uniformed NYPD officer assigned to the Bronx Transit Task Force stopped the suspects and asked for their identification, but both ran off, police said.
The officer caught up to the suspects and tried to arrest them, but the man punched the officer in the face while the woman jumped on his back and knocked him to the ground, police alleged.
The suspects then ran off, police said.
The officer suffered bruising and swelling to his face as a result of the incident, police said.
In the wake of an ongoing investigation and a Crime Stoppers tip, police arrested Raquelle Evans, 20, of the Bronx in connection with the March 7 attack. She was identified by a caller who said she was at a shelter visiting her children, and was arrested at the shelter, police said.
Evans was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, theft of service, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and criminal trespass.
Last week, police had named a different woman – Dasia White, 18 – as a suspect in the incident. But after questioning, police decided White was not a suspect.
The search continued Wednesday for the male suspect -- identified as Travis Johnson, 19. He is a black male standing 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 170 pounds.
