Suspect Arrested At Newark Penn Station In Connection With PATH Train Stabbing
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect was arrested and charged Wednesday in connection with a stabbing that left a man injured on a PATH train beneath the streets of Chelsea.
Michael Stradford, 43, of Paterson, New Jersey, was arrested by Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police officers at Newark Penn Station around 8:20 a.m. Wednesday, police said.
Police spotted Stradford wearing the same clothes that the suspect in the assault was allegedly seen wearing, police said.
He was known to law enforcement and had been ticketed by an NJ TRANSIT officer in the past, police said.
The stabbing happened around 5:40 p.m. Tuesday on a moving southbound PATH train between 33rd and 23rd streets, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police told CSB2.
The victim, a 38-year-old man, was stabbed once in the torso by a man he did not know, police said. The suspect got off the train at 23rd Street and ran off on foot, police said.
Riders were already frustrated by a delay in service caused by a stalled train. The stabbing left some of those riders shaken.
"The fact that you could be in the next car and not even notice it, or at the next stop and not even notice it. It's such a terrifying random coincidence, and it happens just like that," one woman told 1010 WINS' Kevin Rincon.
The victim was taken by ambulance to Bellevue Hospital Center, and he was expected to survive, police said.
