The New York Post reports that if the program is successful, a total of 1,150 buses will have the security cameras by 2014.
The paper says that at first the Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to roll out the system along bus routes in Manhattan.
Currently, only one Brooklyn bus line has cameras.
The equipment will cost about $18,000 per bus.
