Supervisor Declares Snow Emergency In Hempstead
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – The Hempstead supervisor has declared a snow emergency in response to the winter snowstorm. Town Supervisor Kate Murray said the severity of the storm created dangerous conditions.
"We have in excess of 12 inches and so we were really hit the hardest, I think, on Long Island. So we have lots of snow to push and we will check out the beach erosion going forward," Murray said.
Murray requested residents to remove their cars from local roadways so that workers can plow and salt the roads as quickly as possible.
"Our guys have been working for 23 hours straight now, plowing the streets, so we're making good head way but you know the fact is that even major roadways—like Old Country Road and Sunrise Highway—there's still lots of people stuck on those major roads," Murray said.
Murray also advised that residents who shovel driveways should place snow to the right of their driveway when facing the road. By doing so, residents can reduce the effect of having their driveways being "plowed-in" with snow after shoveling.
The town has also suspended its sanitation collection on Monday.
