Superstorm Sandy Dog In Need Of Home As L.I. Shelter Prepares To Close
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A dog that was brought to a temporary shelter in Nassau County after Superstorm Sandy is now in need of a new home as the shelter prepares to close its doors.
Bruno, an adult Rottweiler, has been at the Mitchel Field Emergency Pet Shelter since shortly after Sandy hit in October, the Nassau County SPCA said.
Bruno was living in Long Beach with his owner when the storm slammed the small barrier island. Their house was submerged in water forcing them to leave their home, officials said.
That's when Bruno's owner brought him to Nassau County's emergency pet shelter at Mitchel Field. There, Bruno joined over 500 other family owned pets that were in need of shelter and care after the storm.
But the NCSPCA says what started as weeks at the shelter turned into months for Bruno. His owner lost his job and was forced to find work outside of New York. He also had a hard time finding a new place to live that would accept dogs.
Finding it harder and harder to visit Bruno, his owner decided to say goodbye to his furry friend and turn him over to the shelter.
Bruno is now the very last resident at Mitchell Field and workers desperately want to find him a new, loving home before the shelter officially closes its doors on Friday.
"Bruno is a devoted dog," Gary Rogers, spokesperson for the NCSPCA, said in a statement. "He has had a very difficult last few months and we are desperate to find him a happy ending."
Rogers says Bruno has a strong and sometimes stubborn Rottweiler personality, but becomes "a loveable puppy" around the people he knows.
He says Bruno would be best in a home with an owner who knows and understands the breed.
