Sunken Meadow State Park Closed Off After Reaching Capacity

KINGS PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - The beach at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island was so busy on July 4 that, for several hours, the park had to be closed to new visitors.

The park had reached its capacity of 60,000, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

At least one park goer was not surprised.

"This park has everything. If you want to be in the woods, you can be in the woods. If you want to be on the beach, you can be on the beach. So, it's got everything," Jeanine Augustine told Hall. "It was a beautiful day."

"When you come here from anywhere, you can hike, run, bike, rollerblade, roller skate," said another park goer, Janet from Northport.

She said people were having picnics on the side of the highway because they were not allowed inside the park.
