Big Apple Residents Enjoy Record-Breaking Warm Weather
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Sunday's weather was not anything near what Fall normally feels like, and the warm weather will continue into Columbus Day on Monday.
Summer-like warmth revived crowds at area beaches, including Coney Island.
"A couple of days ago we said 'It's going to be 82? Let's go to the beach'," Brooklyn resident Willie Colon told CBS 2's Elise Finch.
It was so warm, a chilly Autumn ocean actually looked inviting, and some took the plunge.
"It's good. A little cold, but it doesn't matter to me," said 11-year-old Michael Ronda.
Several records were broken as well. JFK Airport saw a new record high of 87, up from 82, while LaGuardia's record rose by one degree, to 85.
In Islip, the previous record of 78 was shattered by Sunday's 85.
The Boardwalk treats of summertime were just as tasty in the Fall.
"And we got our Nathan's Hot Dogs, so we're excited," said Lauren Shute.
Diners in the City's sidewalk cafes enjoyed a balmy evening under the stars, on streets that were wet and windy just days ago.
In the Bronx, it was Independence Day weather for a Columbus Day parade, where band uniforms turned out to be perfectly appropriate dress for the day.
As were the swimsuits on display in Central Park, where bikers and joggers had clear dry park drives to cruise on.
However, the Fall weather will return this week. A system in Florida is expected to make its way north and reach the Tri-State area by Wednesday. There's a chance of rain starting around noon on Wednesday with off-again-on-again rain overnight and into Thursday.
