Single-Vehicle Wreck Kills 3, Injures Several More On Rt 17 In Sullivan County
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Three family members were killed and three more were injured in a single car crash in Upstate New York.
The accident took place near Exit 112 on Route 17 in Sullivan County.
As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, a crumpled SUV carrying several members of the Faitelewicz family was surrounded by debris on Route 17 in Mamakating on Labor Day.
Morris Faitelewicz and his wife Beth died in the crash that, CBS2 has been told only involved their vehicle.
The couple recently celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary in June.
A third family member who had not been identified on Monday night, was also killed.
Morris Faitelewicz was well known for his service as the Captain with the NYPD Auxiliary Police, and his work following 911. He left the NYPD 2-years-ago.
A family friend said the news was absolutely devastating.
"Today also happens to be, the day Morris died, also happens to be the Hebrew day in the Hebrew calender that September 11, occurred and to die on the day that he survived as one of the first responders is a real sad tragic thing," Ira Keller said.
A family friend who spoke to a son who was injured in the crash said he remembers the car flipping four times.
State police were investigating, the cause of the accident remained unclear.
Several others in the car suffered minor injuries.
