Suffolk Marine Unit Rescues 8 From Sinking Boat In Great South Bay
FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police rescued eight people from a sinking boat in Long Island's Great South Bay on Saturday.
Suffolk County police said members of the Marine Bureau were patrolling at around 2:22 a.m. when they encountered a 32-foot Carrera boat taking on water after both engines had failed.
Police said officers John Mullins and Donald Moore tied the boat to their marine bureau vessel, towed it back to Ocean Beach and helped remove water from the boat.
Ocean Beach is about one-third of a mile away on Fire Island.
The operator of the boat, 23-year-old Paul Collins, of East Islip, was issued summonses for an unregistered boat and non-functional navigation lights, police said.
