Business Owner Wants Answers After Maserati Slams Into, Destroys West Islip Storefront
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A Maserati slammed through a storefront in Suffolk County, but the driver still isn't facing charges.
As CBS2's Jessica Schneider reported the crash turned the empty storefront into a flurry of debris and destruction.
The 2010 Maserati slammed into the bagel shop on Higbie Lane in West Islip last Monday night around 10:30.
The driver Michael Bidetti, 40, told police he couldn't remember the accident, and said he might have dozed off in the moments before the wreck.
Rob Castagna's family owns the building that is now in pieces.
"Everything gone, within seconds," Castagna said.
He said they haven't gotten many answers from Suffolk County Police, who said the accident is still under investigation, and the driver hasn't been arrested or charged.
"I am definitely mad," Natale Castagna said.
The inside is completely demolished. Nothing is salvageable except the kitchen in the back, and the owners said the damage will take months to fix.
"It's going to be closed for several months," Castagna said.
Castagna said the driver's insurance company is footing the bill for the mess and the cleanup, but that he will still have to put in countless hours to get his business back to normal.
"Everything's all ripped out completely," Castagna said.
It's a big job, rebuilding a business that the family has operated since the 1960s.
Police have asked for witnesses to come forward so they can piece together more of the details of the crash.
