Suffolk County Armed With Vehicle 'Perfectly Suited' To Handle Mass Casualty Events
YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Suffolk County officials have unveiled a new vehicle to help in emergencies.
The MERV - or Major Emergency Response Vehicle - looks like a massive ambulance, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.
The massive, 42-foot bus-like vehicle has enough room to treat 24 patients and then transport them in the event of a mass casualty event.

"This vehicle is designed to provide medical evaluations, on-site triage, firefighter and EMS rehabilitation and medical support," Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. "You never know when a disaster's going to strike and this vehicle is perfectly suited when you have a major car accident or major disaster. [It can] be deployed quickly and immediately. Clearly, I think it could help save lives."
The vehicle was fully paid for by a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Bellone said it could be used in emergencies in other nearby areas.
