Neighbors Worried After Bears Are Spotted Wandering Around Suffern
SUFFERN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- New video Tuesday showed a group of hungry bears roaming the streets in Rockland County, and neighbors have been left worried.
As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, the bold bear was one of four – roaming around a Suffern neighborhood Tuesday morning and beating the garbage collector to the day's pickup.
It appears to have been a mother bear and her three cubs.
"I took a few of the videos from here, and I took two more from here, from here -- from the deck," said Yudi Weinberg.
Weinberg spotted the black bears from his home around 6:30 a.m. He immediately pulled out his cellphone.
"Like today, when you see something, you just take a video and that's it," Weinberg said. "Just look around in the driveway and open the garbage can, and that's it. It was, I don't know, maybe two minutes."
In the video, the mother bear is seen pulling out the whole garbage bag and starting to leave with it in her mouth, and with her cubs nearby. They eventually scamper off into the woods behind some homes.
Stacy Fox and her husband, Michael, live on the same block.
"We've been living here for 23 years, and in all the years we've been living here, we have never seen any bears," Stacy Fox said.
"We're one with nature around here," added Michael Fox. "So you know, we get lots of deer and lots of animals around here, so bears is just a step up."
A video shot on another street showed one of the bears running across the road.
The wildlife has set off some excitement in the area, and perhaps even a little concern.
"I think the black bears are probably more afraid of us than we are of them, but I'm not too happy about the dog being outside," said Michael Fox. "And I'm certainly not too happy about the kids being outside with it."
Suffern police tracked the bears in the neighborhood Tuesday morning, and have asked residents to be cautious.
