Subway Lines Back In Service After Flatiron District Flood
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The subways were back up and running in the Flatiron District Saturday, after a large water main break flooded a station and disrupted service.
The water cascaded into the 23rd Street N-Q-R subway station around 10:45 a.m. Friday. Nearly 30 feet of water ended up in the station.
Dirty water also flooded the streets, leading to road closures.
The Department of Environmental Protection said age may be an issue, since the water main is 98 years old.
"It certainly is a factor. Whether it's the cause or not, it's not determined yet," said department Deputy Commissioner Jim Roberts. "We'll know a little more once we dig it up, but it is an old main – that's for certain."
The FDNY said the flooding was contained to subway tunnels, and did not reach any basements.
While subway service had resumed by Saturday morning, N trains were still running express between Canal and 57th streets, while the R has been rerouted to the D and F on the Sixth Avenue line.
