Subway Countdown Clocks Knocked Out By Excessive Summer Heat
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Count the MTA's subway countdown clocks as yet another casualty of the sweltering New York City heat.
The clocks have not been working in about a dozen subway stations.
The transit agency says that the clocks, which indicate when the next trains will arrive at the station, are run by equipment in communications rooms that can get extremely hot.
NYC Transit Program Manager Mark Bienstock told 1010 WINS that for the next few days, the clocks "will not be working the way we want them to work."
Bienstock said workers were installing cooling systems to "alleviate the heat conditions in those communications rooms and restore service."
"I can understand why people are not entirely pleased at certain stations are not working the way we want them to work," he said.
The agency hopes to resolve the problem by installing air conditioning units and additional ventilation fans.
