Stunning New Images Released Of The Capture Of Boston Bombing Suspect
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Stark images have been made public of the surviving Boston Marathon bombing suspect just as he surrendered to police.
The photos were publicized in response to the Rolling Stone magazine cover that some say glamorizes Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
As CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez reported Thursday night, the photographer said he wanted the public to see Tsarnaev as he really was.
Bloody and defeated, they are stunning images of Tsarnaev as police surround him on April 19 in nearby Watertown and put an end to the intense manhunt following the Boston Marathon bombings.
The graphic photos posted on Boston Magazine's website show the 19-year-old emerging from the boat where he was hiding.
A sniper rifle laser target glows prominently on his forehead.
Another shows emergency crews giving medical aid to Tsarnaev after his capture, and then rolling him to a waiting ambulance.
Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Sean Murphy took the photos. He said he gave them to Boston Magazine because he was furious and sickened over the latest Rolling Stone cover, Sanchez reported.
Many critics said that pensive photo glamorized the teen suspect, including Murphy, who told Boston Magazine, "I hope that people who see these images will know that this was real. It was as real as it gets."
Many of Boston's first responders were offended by Rolling Stone's cover choice.
"They could've put anybody on that cover -- the police that caught him; the doctors and nurses that helped all those people -- anybody. Anybody but this kid," firefighter Sean O'Brien said.
Massachusetts State Police said it did not authorize the release of the photos. It is conducting an internal investigation. Murphy was relieved of duty for one day, but his future with the department will be decided at a disciplinary hearing next week, Sanchez reported.
