Student Stabbed On Rutgers University-Newark Campus

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A student visiting the library on the Rutgers University-Newark campus Thursday morning was attacked by a man with a sharp object, university officials said.

As CBS2's Dick Brennan reported, the incident took place at around 10:20 a.m. in the Dana Library on University Avenue, and has caused anxiety all around the campus.
"I definitely think, like, it's definitely something to worry about," said Rutgers student Hannan Aslam "I'm not comfortable knowing, like, anyone can walk in and like, hurt people.

"It is wrong that you can't go in public without somebody being assaulted; someone being harassed," said Rutgers student Autumn Renfro.

University officials said the girl who was attacked was on the second floor of the library, and it was not as if she was there alone. There were other people around her when the attacker struck, officials said.

Rutgers police have arrested Raymond Fletcher, 26, of Edison in connection with the stabbing. They said he is not a student, and they believe the victim did not know him.

Fletcher stood charged late Thursday with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.

The university said by law, the Dana Library is open to the public. But that is a concern for some students

"I mean, it is a public library, so we have to watch out," said Rutgers student Bhavin Surti.

The student was rushed to University Hospital in Newark with non-life threatening injuries, officials said. She was alert while being transported to the hospital, according to officials.

Her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

"The thoughts of the whole RU-N community are with our student and her family, including fervent wishes for a speedy recovery," the university said in a statement.

University officials say there's no ongoing threat to the campus. Students who feel the need are urged to call the counseling center at (973) 353-5805.
