Street Outside Yankee Stadium To Be Renamed After Mariano Rivera
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — New York Yankees legend Mariano Rivera is receiving another honor: a street named after him in the Bronx.
Rivera retired from baseball at the end of this past season.
The City Council voted Tuesday to co-name one block of River Avenue after him. The block, which will be renamed Rivera Ave., is right outside Yankee Stadium.
Traditionally, a city street can only be co-named after someone who is deceased. But exceptions can be made.
"It's an honor to have a street named after me," Rivera told the New York Post. " I have a lot of great memories driving down that street. My family and I are extremely grateful for this."
Rivera spent his entire 19-year career with the Yankees.
He is Major League Baseball's all-time leader in saves and won five World Series championships. He is widely considered the best closer in the sport's history.
During his final season, Rivera received gifts from both the Yankees and opposing teams — including the archrival Boston Red Sox.
