Metro-North, NJ TRANSIT Cleaning Up After Storm Damage, Mudslides
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Metro-North and NJ TRANSIT crews are still cleaning up after flooding, mudslides and other storm damage left by heavy rains washed out tracks.
Normal service resumed Thursday on Metro-North's Hudson Line after the rain caused a mudslide near Yonkers, knocking out a pair of tracks and forcing trains to run at slow speeds during the morning rush.
A retaining wall collapsed Wednesday evening at an apartment building above the tracks, sliding mud and bricks onto tracks south of the Glenwood Station.
Residents of the apartment building said the retaining wall runs along an in-ground swimming pool for the building, which has been closed for four years because the retaining wall had huge cracks in it.
"Over years of time, especially with the winter storms that we had, there was a small crack, and over the years I guess between the freezing, thawing, freezing, thawing, so on and so forth it just allowed it to get wider," resident Orlando Brewster said.
Spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said that as a safety precaution, Metro-North slowed trains through the area Thursday to minimize vibrations.
"The major concern in the integrity of the remaining wall behind this property and how we can work with the owner to take care of business," Metro-North's Vice President of Engineering Glen Hayden told CBS 2's Lou Young.
In New Jersey, NJ TRANSIT is cross-honoring bus and rail tickets systemwide Thursday.
Rail service on a portion of the Montclair-Boonton Line will remain suspended until Monday, May 5, to accommodate ongoing repairs to a track washout caused by severe flooding along the railroad overnight.
Substitute bus service will be provided between Montclair State University and Denville stations on Friday, May 2.
