Sting Debuts Musical 'The Last Ship' On Broadway
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It was the curtain call of all curtain calls for music legend Sting Sunday night as he sung the final song of his Broadway debut.
"It's a total novel experience for me. I'm out of my comfort zone, but very excited about it -- terrified, and overjoyed to be here," he said.
As CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez reported, Sunday marked the opening night for "The Last Ship," a brand new musical with music and lyrics by Sting.
A-listers including Robert De Niro and Billy Joel were in attendance as a show of support for their dear friend, Sanchez reported.
"I know Sting is a good musician and he's not going to do anything half way," Joel said.
"I'm a fan of Sting, his music and the Police, and have been for years," said Edie Falco.
Even with 16 Grammy Awards under his belt, becoming a Broadway composer was a dream come true for the 63-year-old singer-songwriter.
"(Does it somewhat feel surreal for you?) Totally! I walk down here every night and I see 'The Last Ship' banner and I -- it is real! I'm convincing myself it's real," Sting said.
The musical is set in an English shipyard town, inspired by Sting's own birthplace and his childhood.
"I think it's special. (That's what I keep hearing.) There's something that's not like other musicals," said actress Patricia Wettig.
"I'm really excited to see what the theater means to him," said Bill Pulman.
And with that, "The Last Ship" has begun its journey on Broadway. And with Sting at the helm, it sounds like its smooth sailing ahead, Sanchez reported.
