NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The stepfather of an 18-year-old beating death victim in Brooklyn was arrested Thursday after he crashed his car on the Jackie Robinson Parkway in Queens.

Police said they found Lakeshia Seymour at a house in Canarsie at around 2:30 p.m. She had suffered severe head trauma. The woman staggered onto her own front porch at 1457 E. 102nd St., before collapsing.

The 53-year-old stepfather, Jean Simon, had fled in a 2003 Mercedes, according to authorities. He crashed in Queens, where  police said a responding Emergency Service Unit spotted the overturned and unoccupied vehicle on the parkway and Cypress Avenue.

Police said they were not chasing the man when he crashed. Officers found the man hiding in heavy brush next to a cemetery at Cypress Avenue and Vermont Place.

Charges are still pending.

From her second-floor porch next door, a neighbor was able see the battered and bloodied body of the victim.
