Statues Stolen From Christmas Creche Found In Ossining
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Residents in one Westchester County town are breathing a sigh of relief after two sacred statues that were stolen from a Christmas display over the weekend have been found.
As CBS 2's Steve Langford reported Monday, someone stole a sheep statue and a donkey statue from the Ossining community creche, which has been a holiday fixture on Croton Avenue for close to six decades.
Bonnie Marconi, treasurer of the group responsible for the nativity scene, said she was devastated by the thievery. "This was our 58th year in putting the crib up and we've never had a problem with this before," Marconi said.
The statues hold more than just the values of Christmas, they're also worth a significant amount of money. The donkey is worth about $5,000, while the sheep is valued at $1,000, Langford reported.
Ossining residents said they were shocked and disgusted by the incident.
"I mean I don't know it's just like somebody punching some poor old lady in the head," one resident said.
"There's no respect anymore for anybody's religion. I don't even understand why they'd have the need to do that. It's just stupid and it's horrible," another resident told Langford.
The statues were discovered on Monday afternoon just a few blocks away from the creche.
Officials said the religious items were loaded onto a truck and sent to a shop for repairs.
Police are still searching for whoever stole the statues.
