Staten Island Triple Shooting Suspect Shot During Arrest In Pennsylvania
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man wanted in connection with a triple shooting on Staten Island that left a mother and son dead is in custody following a shootout with police in Pennsylvania.
Anthony Morales was shot several times during a dramatic confrontation with law enforcement in a parking lot along the Appalachian Trail near the Schuylkill River in Hamburg, Pennsylvania on Monday night.
"As they approached they gave him several commands to put his hands up, he refused. At this point he made the sign of the cross and then he pulled out a gun, at which time members of the task force fired," NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.
An NYPD detective fired three times, a U.S. Marshal fired six times and a Berks County sheriff fired one time, Boyce said.
Morales is in critical, but stable condition.
"We'll bring him back to Staten Island and prosecute him for the homicide," Boyce said.
Morales was wanted in the deaths of 47-year-old Idelle Rivera and her 21-year-old son, Anthony Rivera. The two were shot at 14 Roxbury Street, outside the Mariners Harbor public housing development, on March 24, police said.
Anthony Rivera was working on his Honda Civic, along with a friend, when gunfire broke out, the victim's father said.
Rivera was shot in the head and killed on the street where he's lived for 15 years. His friend was shot multiple times in the left leg.
After hearing her son was gunned down, Idelle Rivera ran outside to help before being shot in the head, just feet away from her boy.
Police say a dispute over money may have led to the shootings.
