Staten Island Man Sentenced For Lying To Authorities About Terror Training
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New York man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for lying to the FBI about efforts to team up with the Taliban or al Qaeda.
Abdel Hameed Shehadeh was sentenced Friday in Brooklyn federal court.
In asking for a maximum 21-year sentence, federal prosecutors offered the judge an apocalyptic vision of what could have happened had Shehadeh succeeded in any of his three plots, WCBS 880's Irene Cornell reported.

At a trial earlier this year, friends of the 23-year-old testified that he talked about waging violent jihad, or holy war, abroad against the U.S. military.
The former Staten Island resident first drew the attention of the FBI in 2008 when he bought a one-way plane ticket to Pakistan. Prosecutors said he later lied by saying he was going to get religious training.
Shehadeh had written the judge a letter saying he deserved credit for giving the FBI tips about another would-be terrorist. But prosecutors said his information didn't help their investigation.
At sentencing, the judge questioned whether Shehadeh had the ability to carry out any jihadist plot.
