Major Brush Fires Break Out On Staten Island; In Linden, N.J.
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Brush fires raged on Staten Island and in Linden, New Jersey, Tuesday afternoon, as low humidity, dry conditions and high winds made for dangerously flammable conditions in the area.
A brush fire broke out around 4:40 p.m. in the Fresh Kills section of Staten Island, near the Staten Island Mall, Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2.
The fire was burning near Richmond Avenue and Forest Hill Road, which was closed at the scene. The site of the blaze was just across Forest Hill Road from a popular Costco store.
The FDNY was getting the upper hand late Tuesday afternoon, and were able to keep the fire at all-hands level.
Flames and plumes of smoke also poured into the sky when a brush fire broke out in Linden earlier in the day.
The Linden fire broke out near a PSEG facility close to the New Jersey Turnpike.
That fire was later brought under control. There was no word on injuries or what started the blaze.
The low humidity and wind prompted a red flag Warning for the area Tuesday. Under a red flag warning, conditions are ideal for brush fires that may spread rapidly.
