Disguised Thieves Snatch Over $100,000 In Merchandise From Staten Island Jeweler
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Thieves on Staten Island broke into a jewelry store, and made off with tens of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise.
As CBS2's Scott Rapoport reported, police have been looking for two well disguised suspects in connection with the brazen jewel heist.
"Terrible, terrible. Things like this shouldn't happen," store owner Joe said.
The owner of Fortune Jewelers on New Dorp Lane said his business was fleeced by two concealed, bold, bandits.
The pair is accused of robbing the place of more than $100,000 in jewels around 4 a.m. Sunday, in the dead of the night.
It was like something out of a movie.
"The way they was dressed, if you could only see this in the movies. You don't see this anywhere," Joe said.
The owner 'Joe' didn't want to give his last name. He said the suspects were clad in white Tyvek suits, gloves, and masks to hide their identity and that one of them was wearing a headlamp.
They busted into the back door of the vacant business next door, smashed through a wall, and then broke through a door to the jewelry store to gain entry.
The suspects ransacked five display cases totaling $120,000.
"Diamond studs, rosary beads, diamond pendants, diamond crosses," Joe said.
The NYPD said there is surveillance tape from the store, but it has not been released yet.
Joe said he was stunned when he saw it for the first time.
"They're obviously professional guys. They know what they were doing," he said.
Monday, he said he was on edge waiting for the thieves to be caught.
Joe said the rip off is particularly galling because he created the stolen pieces with his own hands, and can't duplicate them.
