Police Search For Intruder In Staten Island Home Invasion
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman came face to face with an intruder during a frightening home invasion on Staten Island late Monday night.
The woman walked into her home at the corner of Benedict and Mundy avenues in the Westerleigh section around midnight and found a man inside coming down the stairs, police said.
He was holding a knife and had as much as $15,000 in cash in his hands, police said.
He put the knife to the woman's throat, but then fled without harming her, according to police.
Surveillance video from a few doors down showed police searching the neighborhood.
A neighbor said she heard a mysterious noise at her door right about that time.
"Just before 12, I heard somebody was trying to open the door," Sonia Ianiro told CBS2's Steve Langford. "I thought my son was coming in or the cat was playing. That's all I really heard. But now you tell me the news, I'm really upset."
The suspect remains on the loose. He is described as Hispanic and in his 30s.
There was no sight of the victim or her family outside the home Tuesday, as residents expresed deep concerns about what's going on in their long-peaceful neigborhoods.
"Staten Island's going crazy," Ianiro said. "We all have to be aware of all this."
"I'm shocked, and I got goosebumps," said one neighbor.
The home does have surveillance camers in the front and back.
