Suspect Charged In Connection With Staten Island Carjacking, Second Incident

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police say a man wanted in connection with a carjacking on Staten Island and a shooting incident near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge toll plaza earlier this week has been arrested and charged after he allegedly tried to steal another car.

Police said 25-year-old Tyrell Brown was behind the wheel of a stolen Hummer when officers pulled him over early Monday morning on the upper level of the bridge.

That's when the alleged gunfire broke out and Brown took off in the stolen Hummer, police sources told CBS 2. The vehicle was later found abandoned in the area of Narrows Road North and Stuben Street.

Investigators said Brown was armed with a gun when he carjacked the Hummer's owner Sunday morning on Holland Avenue.

On Tuesday, police offered a $12,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Police said Brown was apprehended Tuesday night after allegedly trying to steal another vehicle on Walker Street around 9:40 p.m., but abandoned the 2013 Honda Civic after realizing it was a manual transmission.

Police said about a half an hour later, officers on patrol received information on Brown's whereabouts and apprehended him in the vicinity of Osgood and Mosel avenues without incident.

Brown is charged with first-degree robbery and criminal possession of stolen property in Sunday's incident, and attempted robbery in Tuesday's incident.
