St. John's Beats Youngstown State, Harrison Breaks School 3-Point Record
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — D'Angelo Harrison became St. John's all-time leader in made 3-pointers and finished with 29 points to lead the Red Storm to a 96-87 win over Youngstown State on Saturday.
Phil Greene IV added 17 points, while JaKarr Sampson and Sir'Dominic Pointer each added 16 for the Red Storm (8-3), who have won four of their last five.
St. John's made 8 of 12 3-pointers, and shot 50.8 percent from the field.
Harrison became St. John's all-time leader in made 3-pointers 26 seconds into the game, with 152. The previous record holder was Willie Shaw, who made 151 between 2000 and 2003. Harrison finished 5-for-6 from 3-point range. The five made 3-pointers were the most for Harrison since he made four in St. John's 69-54 win over South Florida on Feb. 20.
Kendrick Perry led Youngstown State (8-6) with 20 points. Ryan Weber added 16, DJ Cole 12, Bobby Hain 11 and Shawn Amiker 10. The Penguins have lost three of their last five.
Youngstown State made 45.5 percent of its shots from the field for the game. But the Penguins only made four of their 15 attempted 3-pointers in the second half.
St. John's took control of what had been a taut affair in the second half. The Red Storm went on a 13-6 run in a span of 3:30 midway through the second half to turn a slight 57-53 lead to a 70-59 advantage.
Youngstown State cut the lead to six, 72-66, after Keene's made 3 with 9:45 left. But that was as close as they Penguins would get. Following the Keene's basket, St. John's went on a 15-8 run, highlighted by two Orlando Sanchez dunks. Sanchez finished with nine points, all in the second half.
At the half, the Red Storm and the Penguins were tied 43-43.
St. John's did not have freshman guard Rysheed Jordan, who was in Philadelphia with his ailing mother, Amina Robinson. Jordan, who was voted the pre-season Big East Rookie of the Year, is averaging 6.3 points and three assists in nine games this season. Without Jordan, the Red Storm activated redshirt sophomore guard Felix Balamou, who had two points in 10 minutes.
The game was only the second all-time between the Big East and Horizon League programs. St. John's won the first matchup, 75-65, on Nov. 29, 1986.
