Driver Gets Prison In Wrong-Way Crash That Killed NYPD Detective
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Westchester County driver will spend four to 12 years in prison for a high-speed, wrong-way parkway crash that killed an NYPD detective.
Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty says Efren Moreano of Yonkers was sentenced Wednesday in the February 2015 death of Detective Paul Duncan.
Moreano was driving on the Sprain Brook Parkway in Greenburgh while drunk and high on marijuana.
Investigators determined Moreano was going 105 miles an hour. He went the wrong way for two miles, forcing other drivers off the road.
Duncan, a Hartsdale resident, was driving to work when he was hit head-on. He was headed to Queens for an earlier shift that he took so he could be home sooner for his 13-year-old daughter.
The 46-year-old detective was assigned to the NYPD's Internal Affairs. He was just 10 months from retirement.
Moreano pleaded guilty in April to manslaughter, reckless endangerment and vehicular manslaughter.
