Sports Leagues Fight New Jersey Law Allowing For Sports Betting
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The nation's four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA filed papers Monday seeking to stop New Jersey's law to allow legal sports betting, just days before the law is due to take effect.
The NFL, the NBA, the NHL, MLB and the NCAA filed legal papers in federal court in Trenton on Monday, seeking an injunction that would stop the state from allowing casinos and racetracks to offer sports betting.
So far, Monmouth Park is the only location that has said it is ready to accept wagers.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill into law Friday that effectively repeals the state's laws against sports gambling. The move is seen as a way around a 1990s federal law that restricts sports gambling to Nevada and three other states.
The leagues and NCAA claim New Jersey's new law violates federal law and should not be implemented.
