Southbound Lane Of Henry Hudson Parkway Closed For Repairs
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It could be slow going for commuters who take the Henry Hudson Parkway into Manhattan as one of three southbound lanes will be closed for the next week for repairs.
The city's Department of Transportation is promising a safer, smoother ride as DOT crews make subsurface repairs on the parkway, but the work is expected to bring a rough commute for drivers.
Until Tuesday June 24, the southbound right lane will be closed between West 89th and West 86th streets.
The southbound entrance ramps to the parkway from West 125th Street to West 96th Street will also be closed between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. daily with traffic diverted to local streets.
The project was announced on Friday and began on Saturday, CBS 2's Kathryn Brown reported.
On Monday afternoon, workers were digging up the right lane which traditionally floods during heavy rains.
The DOT did not elaborate on why the project was done with very little advance warning, but workers said that it was part of an emergency repair project.
Constant flooding had apparently undermined the road and put it at risk of collapsing. On Monday, crews were filling in gaps and adding cement drains to hopefully alleviate flooding in the future.
The project is good news for commuters in the long run, but has caused massive backups and big headaches for drivers who said that they did not know about the lane closures.
NYPD traffic officers will be posted at key intersections to help people get around, but officials are urging drivers to take alternate routes if possible.
