Sources: Eliot Spitzer Dating Bill de Blasio's Spokeswoman

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- CBS 2 has learned Eliot Spitzer, the former governor known as the "love gov," has a new girlfriend.

Sources told CBS 2 Political Reporter Marcia Kramer that Spitzer has been dating Lis Smith, who is currently the spokeswoman for mayor-elect Bill de Blasio.

The pair met when Smith joined Spitzer's failed campaign for comptroller.

Spitzer had to resign as governor in 2008, after it was revealed he was "client-9" in the Emperor VIP Club call girl ring.

He sought a comeback in the race for comptroller this year, but was edged out by Manhattan Borough President Stringer, 52 percent to 48 percent.

Spitzer apparently is still married to wife Silda, who stood by him through the prostitution scandal. But they have been living apart for a time.

The Spitzer camp released a statement Sunday night, reading, "Lis Smith is a friend of Eliot's and he holds her in high regard."

Smith did not return calls for comment.
