Some Turn To Online Gift Registries To Get What They Want This Holiday Season

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- You know what they say: "If you don't ask, you don't get." But when it comes to holiday gifts, hinting has traditionally been the way to go.

Now, as CBS2's Scott Rapoport explained, there is a newer, more direct approach.

It's an inevitable part of the holiday season, despite all of the hints we leave  somehow the message doesn't get through.

"I would like draw a picture on the refrigerator. She'd be like, 'what is that?' I'd say 'figure it out,'" Marlene Nurse said.

But, what if there was a way to make your holiday hinting process more effective?

Nancy Lee, the president of myregistry.com, claims she has a fool-proof way to get exactly what you want.

The site lets you connect to the online sites of more than 3,000 of the biggest stores around and their seemingly endless inventory. It enables you to create a wish-list and choose exactly what you want to get.

"It's very comfortable. It's very easy, and it saves everybody a lot of time and money," Lee said.

Myregistry isn't the only one doing it. You can find registries run by retailers like Target, Amazon, Toys 'R Us and Bed Bath And Beyond.

Nationally, gift registries are a multibillion dollar industry.

Of course you will still have to let friends and loved ones know that you've registered and picked out what you want.

"They're doing that for holiday gifts?" April Landis said, "That's awful. That's not what it's about."

Others disagreed.

"I think it's a great idea," Nancy Bayer said.

The choice is yours.
