WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reports
Westport superintendent of schools Dr. Elliott Landon says social media can be a valuable thing.
Just as the district has set rules for e-mail and internet, so too are they needed for Facebook, Twitter, and the rest.
"The purpose of it, in part, is to assure confidentiality in terms of student information," Landon told WCBS 880 reporter Paul Murnane.
Hartford attorney Dan Schwartz, of the Connecticut Employment Law Blog, says Westport is not alone in dealing with the issue.
"Some are being very strict, prohibiting nearly all use of social media," says Schwartz.
Schwartz says school districts walk a fine line in protecting student and staff information, but they can't muzzle communication.
