Snow-Covered Bus Stops Posing Serious Danger For Commuters

HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Snow-covered bus stops are putting some New Jersey residents in dangerous situations.

On Route 4 in Hackensack, N.J., commuters could be seen struggling, almost falling on frozen mounds of snow as they step out onto the street, CBS 2's Christine Sloan reported Friday.

"It's all piled up and there is nowhere to go," Jessica Gonzalez said. "I have fallen through a few times but it is part of the trip so what are you going to do?"

The same dangerous conditions were found at a NJ TRANSIT stop on Route 3 in Clifton, N.J., Sloan reported.

Valentina Olivor said she has to stand on a foot of frozen snow - much of it packed in most likely by plow trucks.

"What can we do? It is snow, it is winter, it is difficult to clean everything," Olivor said. "The bus should be coming but I can't see the bus."

A spokesperson for NJ TRANSIT said it isn't the agency's responsibility to shovel the bus stops and directed Sloan to call the towns or the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The DOT said it is definitely not their responsibility, they just plow the roads, Sloan reported.

A spokesperson for the Town of Hackensack said the town is only responsible for bus stops within the confines of the city, not on highways.

Plenty of bus stops along Route 17 in Paramus were shoveled. However, town officials couldn't say who took the time to clear the snow.

CBS 2 reached out to the city manager of Clifton, he said the town has never dealt with the bus stops and that he has to find out whose responsibility it is.

Until then, residents will need to watch their step and watch out for traffic.
