Service was fully restored around 9:30 p.m. after being suspended in both directions on the J and M lines between Marcy Ave. and Broad Street earlier in the afternoon.
The smoke was reported around 2:50 p.m. between the Essex Street and Bowery stations.
Firefighters were called to the scene, but no injuries were reported.
Service resumed on B, D and M lines at around 4:45 p.m. with residual delays.
A lower Manhattan-bound J train with 350 passengers and a Queens-bound M train with 200 riders had to back up to Essex Street to let the people out. The MTA said that took about 18 minutes.
