Suffolk Executive Bellone Unveils Plans For New Smith Point Bridge
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said plans are underway for a new bridge to be built.
Once the bridge is constructed, the current one will be knocked down.
Bellone said the new bridge will have lanes for pedestrians and bicyclists.
"As we think about reconstructing roads and bridges, we have to be focused on how we move people around other than by just the automobile," he said.
The bridge would be built 55 feet above the Great South Bay to allow boats to pass underneath. The current one is a drawbridge that can cause traffic tie-ups.
