Small Bugs Helping To Prevent Power Outages In Connecticut

NORWALK, CT (WCBS 880) -- Connecticut Light & Power is taking a proactive approach to prevent power outages this summer.

Little black and orange Weevils are getting high marks for controlling an invasive and fast growing vine that could cause a lot of trouble if left unchecked.

The so-called "mile-a-minute" vine is growing at the CL&P substation in Norwalk. Doug Pestoka is helping to release the little insects, the vine is their food of choice.

"It's very aggressive, very fast growing. It can grow up to six inches in a single day, up to 24 feet in a year and of course from power companies' perspective, we're concerned with vines that grow up poles and high wires and cause outages to our customers," said Pestoka.

Pestoka says this vine is so invasive that it could take over the power lines at the substation in a single season.
