Trent Bronner, of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., was arraigned on a felony arson charge on Wednesday and taken to the Westchester County jail.
The 21-year-old Bronner has volunteered with the Sleepy Hollow fire department for three years.
"The guys are very disappointed for one of the simple facts that he was a very active firefighter. He was around all the time. You call and ask him to do anything. He'd be the first guy to sign up for training. He's very active with our junior corps. He always helped the kids out," Sleepy Hollow fire chief John Korzelius told WCBS 880's Sean Adams.
It's unclear what led police to Bronner, although he did post photos of the fire on Facebook.
No motive has been disclosed, but typically when a firefighter commits arson, he wants to be the hero who comes to the rescue.
The department's web site listed Bronner as responding to the most fire calls from April 2010 to March 2011. The name of his lawyer could not immediately be determined.
The March 20 fire caused extensive damage to a two-family house. No one was injured.
