Singer Gavin DeGraw Beaten, Struck By Cab In Manhattan

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Singer Gavin DeGraw, best known for the song "I Don't Wanna Be," is recovering after being beaten and struck by a cab in the East Village Monday.

DeGraw, 34, is in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital. He suffered a broken nose, two black eyes, and a concussion.

Police say the singer was assaulted by a group of men early Monday morning. Police think an argument may have preceded the beating. DeGraw had been at a place on First Avenue and Sixth Street just before the incident. As DeGraw stumbled away from his assailants, he was reportedly struck by the cab at 19th Street.

There have been no arrests.

"I think it's kind of lame that a bunch of New Yorkers would jump [him]. This is what we're built on. We're all actors and artists and musicians, and it's just not cool," said Queens resident Jon Drake.

Just before the attack, DeGraw, who is from upstate New York near the Catskills, had been hanging out with some of his friends at The National Underground, a Lower East Side bar on Houston Street he owns with his brother.

Police sources tell CBS 2 that DeGraw hasn't been able to identify or even describe his attackers because he was too drunk at the time of the incident.

DeGraw's hit "I Don't Wanna Be" is also the theme song for the TV show "One Tree Hill." Another DeGraw hit is "Not Over You." His next album, "Sweeter," is set to debut in September.

DeGraw had to cancel a concert appearance at Saratoga Springs Tuesday night with Train and Maroon 5.
