Sick Passenger Hospitalized After Landing At Newark From Ebola-Affected Country
HACKESACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A sick passenger who recently traveled from an Ebola-affected country was hospitalized after landing at Newark Liberty International Airport Monday.
The passenger, reportedly a woman who had been working in health care in Sierra Leone, was transferred to Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack after the United Airlines flight from Brussels, Belgium landed Monday afternoon, according to the hospital and published reports.
The passenger was kept overnight for evaluation in an abundance of caution, the hospital said.
"Please rest assured that our dedicated team of healthcare providers is taking every precaution in treating this patient and they are led by our Infection Control team, working in accordance with protocols provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention," the hospital said.
Back in October, Dr. Craig Spencer was diagnosed with Ebola in New York City and isolated. He later recovered.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Christie later issued a joint policy of quarantining those suspected of having direct contact with Ebola patients. The policy was criticized by health experts and federal officials who say it could discourage medical workers from traveling to Africa.
